Cats : Helpful Dietary Guidelines

Often it can be hard to know exactly what to feed a cat to keep them strong and healthy, especially when some of them seem to be not at all discerning when it comes to their food! It’s really important, though, that you feed your cat good quality cat food. A while a go, there was a scandal when lots of harmful chemicals were found in cheap cat food from China and cheap food in general can often be harmful for cats.

As a general rule, wet food is more nutritional than dry food, so you should try and feed your cat wet varieties of food wherever you can. Most commonly, cats like to chicken, lamb or beef, but you can feed them other things when they are in season. This could include other poultry such as pheasant or animals such as rabbit. A lot of it depends on what your cat likes – some cats like to have more variety than others.

Consider big cats in the wild. Lions, tigers, panthers and more all eat lots of raw meat on a regular basis, so it’s absolutely fine for you to give your cat raw meat as well to keep them strong and healthy. This can be an excellent source of protein for cats, especially when you feed them good quality cuts of meat. Just make sure that it’s all in season and preferably cut into small chunks as domesticated cats often need more help with digestion.

Of course, these days it isn’t necessary to feed your cat on raw meat if you can’t afford it. Commercial cat food companies have spent millions of dollars researching what sort of nutrients cats need and their cat food offers a great alternative to raw meat. Most of it is nutritionally balanced and tasty and the vast majority of cats love it. Make sure you buy the best quality you can as the cheap brands are often harmful, so spending a little extra is worth it.

Finally, you should always make sure your cat has access to plenty of fresh water as this will help to keep their fur coats healthy and shiny, as well as helping their digestion process when they eat. This is especially important if you feed your cat any dry food as they will need more help in digesting in properly. It’s also important to make sure their bowls are kept clean and hygienic as this will prevent the spread of infection and keep them in great shape.
