A large dog rustic dog seen speedily weaving in and out between the cattle to bring a runaway back to the herd would be an impressive sight. Obviously, the dog has the courage of an outstanding herding dog. The square shaped muscular body is covered with short sleek fur that can be grey, brindled or fawn in color. Although the dog is larger in size than other herding dogs, the size does not make it less agile. In fact its elegant and efficient herding ability is seldom seen in other herding dogs. This very rare breed that is seldom seen outside Portugal is the Azores Cattle Dog.

From the time it was created and up to the present, the Azores Cattle Dog has always been a most valued dog that has an outstanding ability to herd unruly cattle. Back in the 15th century, Sao Miguel Island, the biggest island in the Azores is densely covered with vegetation. The sailors of Prince Henry have decided to take advantage of the rich plant life by bringing cattle to the island. In fourteen years, the cattle that were left on the island have flourished and grown into unmanageable herds. To take the issue in hand, it was decided that a breed of dog with excellent herding qualities must be developed.

The Azores Cattle Dog also known as Cao Fila De Sao Miguel was developed from the Fila de Terceira breed. This breed was crossed with molloser type dogs creating an outstanding herding dog that was given the name Azores Cattle Dog. The breeds existence was documented since the 1800s.

This dog has an inherent herding ability thus very little training is necessary to make the dog learn the ropes of herding. An Azores Cattle Dog’s aggressive personality is a valuable asset that makes this breed an outstanding guard dog. The primary function of an Azores Cattle Dog is to herd. A herding dog has to have an aggressive temperament to be able to function well thus breeders have made no efforts temper the dog’s aggressive personality.

This breed is a remarkable herder and makes a mean guard dog as well but an Azores Cattle Dog would not be a wise choice of dog for a first time dog owner. This breed would need a dominant owner that will be able to make the dog toe the line and one that will understand the special needs of this breed. It must be realized that an Azores Cattle Dog is first and foremost a working breed. This working dog is obviously not an apartment dweller. An Azores Cattle Dog is an outstanding breed especially if made to guard and to herd.

Dogs can be good pets but they can definitely be a lot of trouble from time to time which is why many k9 lovers are turning to the <a href=”http://ezinearticles.com/?Review—SitStayFetch-DIY-Dog-Training-Guide&id=2561929″>SitStayFetch DIY Online Dog Training eBook</a> to learn how to teach their pets to behave all the time. This is an affordable PDF guide that can be bought on the web twenty-four/seven.

While it is true that there are many plusses to hiring a local dog trainer there are also some negatives. Most obviously a local professional dog trainer is definitely going to be more expensive when compared to buying an online dog training book. Another not so good thing is that you aren’t necessarily learning how to train your dog yourself, but instead you are relying on someone else to change their behaviors.

On the other hand a professional dog training expert is going to be more skilled as a dog trainer than you will be just by reading a book. A professional dog training expert is simply going to be far better at dog training than you could ever hope to be by reading an eBook you downloaded online.

That being said, if you really do want to go the “DIY” route I believe that <a href=”http://www.thenextnew.com/sitstayfetch-dog-training/105/”>SitStayFetch</a> is a great way to go. It is a book that has worked for thousands of other dog lovers and it is totally guaranteed (with a 60 day total money back refund available.)

SitStayFetch is laid out in a very to follow way that allows you to quickly learn how to correct any particular issue you might be having with your dog including problems with aggressive behavior and house training.

For pet owners who live near Austin there is an excellent choice available for training your dog which is <a href=”http://www.facebook.com/pages/Austin-TX/Steve-DeBono-Dog-TrainerBehavior-Consultant/198462187958″>this Austin, Texas dog trainer<a>.

Ticks on dogs aren’t much loved by any dog owner. They are mean tiny blood suckers that animals and people alike find to be exceptionally irritating. Not only do they cause your pet dog to be uncomfortable, but they also wind up tumbling onto the living room rug whereas you are not expecting them. A couple of strategies can be helpful to limit ticks from being a pest to both you and your pet dog companion.

Pets who stay outside most of the time are more susceptible to accumulating ticks than an inside pet dog. Though, if you have tall grass in your backyard or alongside the sides, any pet may get ticks from this area.

Keeping grass cut back will lower the likely-hood that your pet may get any stray parasites. Verdant areas may as well be atomized with pesticides to keep back ticks on your dogs.

Natural pesticides are procurable from several lawn and backyard stores. Those are superior to employ than the varieties with lots of chemical compounds within them. Pets have been known to get unhealthy from chemical-filled pesticides, even when the proper quantity of drying time has taken place. Ticks on your dogs are less widespread when bedding is atomized or covered with flea and tick powder.

In addition making certain your dog’s cot is free from parasites, making use of monthly repulsive to your dog will as well facilitate. There are special formulas that can be squeezed on top of the backside of your pet dog’s neckline for extended security against parasites. This treatments generally lasts a month and removes fleas too. Collars with treatments on them for rejecting ticks are a less expensive alternative to the monthly submission.

Most flea and tick collars keep on quite a few months at a time. Ticks on dogs are controllable, although you will need to test a few methods before you get something that works perfectly for your pet dog. Frequently long-haired dogs have hair that is so concentrated that it’s hard to see ticks in the first place. Except you keep a close eye on your pet, you will end up omitted ticks that have tied themselves to your pet dog companion.

Defending your pet dog from ticks will not only help out him have a more agreeable living, but it may as well remain you away from finding squished parasites on your floor. Ticks on dogs will leave scars, sores, and cause skin infections.

On occasion these infections become grave enough that a visitation to the veterinarian is in order. Make sure your pet dog is protected for the duration of the months while ticks are out and about.

A properly socialized dog can adapt well to any given situation – can get along well with all the pets of the family and all the members of the household. By socializing the pet an owner is assured to have an ideal and well behaved companion for life. Proper socialization prevents the development of unwanted behavior and turns the dog into a happy and well behaved member of the family. A first time dog owner may have heard about the necessity to socialize the pet, of the benefits of socialization but how is a dog socialized.

In spite of the fact that dogs are acclaimed to be social creatures, some individuals would not interact well with people and with other animals as dogs too have different personalities. Shy or nervous dogs will react either with fear or with aggression to unfamiliar faces or to new situations. On the other hand, a dog with a dominant personality will always try to be the alpha male whether the pack consists of humans or animals. Taking a dog for a pet entails more that giving the dog its basic needs. A dog owner has to undertake the socialization of the dog so as to have well adjusted and well behaved pet that will not be intimidated nor show aggression when confronted with unfamiliar people and situations.

It is best to start socialization when the dog is between 8 to 16 weeks of age. But this does not mean that older dogs cannot be socialized. To desensitize an older dog though, a pet parent has to be more patient and persistent. Puppies are easily socialized because they have not yet formed habits.

As soon as the vet has given the GET-GO, the puppy must be introduced to everything that it will be exposed to when it gets older. Start by regularly grooming your dog so that it can get used to being touched. Being handled will prepare the dog to being touched by the vet, by the groomer and by other people.

Let the pet mingle with other dogs by taking the dog to the local dog park or enrolling the pet to an obedience class. Introduction to people and animals as well as exposure to varied situations will socialize the dog. A puppy would be more manageable so you can take the pet to the mall, to the pet supply store or to the neighbor’s. Use treats to encourage the dog not to shy away from unfamiliar faces, places and situations. The socialization efforts will be all worth it as the dog will grow into a well adjusted and well mannered pet.

What would you do if you if you are in a temperature controlled room, have a comfortable bed and have nothing to do? Sleep!. In similar circumstances, the dog would do a lot of sleeping too. Dogs are known to do a lot of sleeping. A dog would commonly sleep more than half the day away! This would make some people think that dogs are a lazy lot.

Generally, dogs are known to be very active animals. These animals would even develop destructive habits if opportunities to expend their excess energies are not provided by the owner. Dogs like humans would derive benefits from sleeping. However, there are various reasons for the dog’s inclination to sleep a lot.

General health condition, personality and the level of activity largely influence the dog’s sleeping pattern. Although dogs generally have high energy levels, some breeds like the Newfoundland and St. Bernard are naturally “slow moving” dogs. These breeds are even called rug or mat dogs because of their inclination to lie down rather than indulge in strenuous activities. Would you believe these breeds known as rug dogs can sleep for about 18 hours a day.

Working breeds are different as these dog will be seen up and about doing their work. A dog utilized to herd or protect livestock would be seen constantly patrolling the area where the animals being protected are located. While working, sniffing dogs used by law enforcers to find bombs and narcotics would not be seen sleeping. Farm dogs that perform varied functions would find little time to curl and sleep.

Dogs of apartment dwelling owners would have more time to sleep unlike farm dogs that are given ample chance to roam freely thus they would not be seen sleeping the day away. Owners would ensure that the pet has all the comforts it can have. From being barn dogs that sleep anywhere and in any kind of weather condition, dogs now live in temperature controlled homes and sleep in softly padded beds complete with doggie blankets. These conditions would entice the dog to sleep most of the day. Dogs may appear to be soundly asleep but they would wake up at the lightest sound. Dogs have the ability to be alert the instant they are roused from sleep. Dogs may sleep a lot but the heightened senses enables these four legged friends to be awake in an instant thus they can be depended to protect the human family.

Obviously dogs like to sleep, but why do dogs sleep so much? Come on over to Sarah’s Dogs and find out more.

Dogs are like small kids, they always seek attention from their owners. Dog separation anxiety is often the major problem dog owners are experiencing with their new puppies. New dogs are afraid to be left alone just like your kids do not to be left alone at home. They feel panicky once the owner leaves and start to do strange things that will catch their owner’s attention.

Dogs may be thinking that if they do undesirable things while their owner is away, the owner will decide to just stay home the next day and never leave them alone anymore. Common undesirable actions of dog with separation anxiety are urinating everywhere in your house, pooping on furniture’s, whining and squirming restlessly, gnawing on things in your house and digging
.
Dog experts say that there are several dog separation anxiety cures and techniques that are proven to be effective. Dogs can quickly register the signs that their owner is about to leave the house as they are very observant.

Some of the owner’s actions that they consider signs of him leaving are wearing footwear, unlocking the doors, and the sound of the keys being grabbed. Once they hear and see these signs, immediately the dog rushes to the door to delay the owner or to go out, following him wherever he may go. So the house must be left by the dog owners unnoticed.

It is not so easy to leave unnoticed. Dog’s sight and hearing are not like humans. It maybe too late for the owner to try to leave unnoticed as theirs are very sensitive. So here are a few methods that you can do to reduce, and even eliminate the dog’s anxiety and panic every time you leave the house. Take your dog out for a stroll before leaving the house, making the dog exhausted after.

Before going out the house give the dog food. It will keep the dog busy for a while and can also make it sleepy. Make it a practice that you do all the things that you think your dog consider as signs of you leaving, then leave and come back after a very short period of time. Having done those he gets used to it and will no longer think you are leaving the house and that way, your dog will become less and less panicky when he sense those things.

Equally exciting to having a new dog is the task of choosing a suitable name for the pet. Choosing a name for the newdog is a fun process especially if children are made members of the name choosing committee as these little ones usually come up with outrageous names. There are plenty of possible names for the dog to choose from. A whole range of available names for your new pet will be made available simply by logging on to pet name websites. However, the selection of the name can be a challenging chore not because of the limited choices but because of several factors to be considered. So how do you name your dog?

The name of the dog is actually a reflection of the owner’s personality. Common dog names such as Rover, Spot or Fido will be the name of choice of a person with an unadventurous personality while dogs with bizarre names are usually owned by people with wacky personalities. A person with an odd sense of humor will name a large dog breed Tiny or call a black coated dog Snow White. The name that was chosen will remain the dog’s name for the rest of the pet’s life. Calling the dog Pooper or Stinky is really your choice but as you would call the dog about 35,000 wouldn’t you think that the name would give a negative impression on the dog?

Following a set of rules is not necessary when choosing a name for the dog but some guidelines will be helpful. A long unique name that looks good in the registration name may be hard to pronounce. The long name will confuse the dog. A one or two syllable name would be easier for the dog to remember. Once the dog hears his name he will understand that the person calling is trying to get his attention.

A healthy dog may be given the name Fit. Fit sounds like Sit and a dog that is being trained to sit will be confused. A dog’s ability to understand humans is limited. Instead of following the sit command the dog may approach the master.

Dogs will remain loyal and affectionate even if the master never bothered to give them a proper name. Wouldn’t you think that it is just proper to give our most loyal friends a name that will give them their very own identity?

Even though you own a canine and have ensured that it gets the best care, there are still chances that your pet might attract the deadly heartworm disease, in spite of the fact that your canine appears really strong and in good shape. That is why it is critical that you protect your dog from this condition, by using Heartgard Plus for dogs.

Heartgard Plus for dogs

The Heartgard plus tablets are much in demand in many of the dog stores since they protect and safeguard the dogs against any potential health hazard or diseases.

Many of the pets are given oral medicines either manually or by adding the same to their regular diet, but Heartgard plus is relished by dogs since it is available in a form which is easy to chew and tasty too. Heartgard plus is available in a chewable form and includes beef which is loved by most of the canines, except for some of them who are allergic to beef.

If your dog cannot handle beef adequately, then there are ordinary tablets available.

You could free your pet from these ghastly parasites by giving heartgard plus chewable tablets which include Ivermectin and that safeguards many of the domestic farm animals from these parasites working particularly well for dogs since they positively respond to these tablets.

However, the amount of Ivermectin present in the medicine is minimal, which means that it will only eliminate heartworm larvae. The heartgard pills prevents infection from attacking your canine and stops further multiplication of larvae.

Heartgard plus cannot stop heartworms from entering your canine’s body, but it actually clears off the larvae which has already got accumulated in your canine’s blood.

These tablets have to be taken every month to ensure that the larvae does not multiply..

Heartgard plus medicines is the preferred choice as compared to Ivermectin heartworm pills since the Ivermectin tablets is not as potent leading to the larvae multiplying.

Pyrantel is present in Heartgard plus tablets which helps in getting rid of the parasites from your canine’s body.

When it comes to de-worming and eliminating hookworms and roundworms, Heartguard plus chewable tablets are the preferred option. Heartguard plus tablets help in getting rid of heartworms as well as worms in the intestine, all at one time.

Being a pet parent entails a lot of responsibilities to guarantee the health of the pet. One of the essential tasks a pet parent must learn is how to give the pet a pill. Administering oral medications to sick dogs would not be too burdensome as the task will be over when the dog gets well. Dogs need vitamins and supplement too thus an owner not armed with easy pilling techniques has to wrestle with the dog everyday. How to give your dog a pill?

A dog that spews the pill or eludes the master makes pilling even more difficult. Dogs are cunning animals so that even if the pill is hidden inside a treat, the treat will be eaten and the pill spewed out. Dogs do not know that if they take the pill, they would get well thus a pet owner has to find ways to make the task a little easier.

Dogs can be accomplished con artists that would act like good little boys that would willingly open the mouth so that the master can pop the pill. Dogs though are cunning animals and it would be a simple matter to spew the pill once the master’s back is turned. If your dog has this kind of attitude, the obvious thing that must be done is to watch the dog for while until you are sure that the pill was swallowed.

Another pilling technique is to disguise the taste of pill with the taste of food. This can be done by mixing a little amount of food with the crushed pill or with the liquid medication. However, this technique can only be done if the pet is not under dietary restriction. Dogs usually gobble their favorite foods thus; ham, liverwurst or chicken breast can be used to hide the pill.

Sick dogs are harder to pill as they usually refuse to eat. Masking the taste of the pill with the taste of food would not be an effective technique. The pet must be coached to swallow the pill by placing it directly to the base of the tongue. This technique would be easier if the dog is accustomed to being touched or to teeth brushing. The mouth must be opened so that the pill can be inserted at the base of the tongue. To protect your hand from being bitten by the dog, you have to make sure that the teeth are covered by the flews. To encourage the dog to swallow the pill gently blow on the nose.

The Bond that can come between a person and a dog can be extremely strong, especially if that bond had been strengthened living with each other for many years, I have personally cried after loosing our family dog that had been like a best friend to me from my birth till I as 15 years old, when he was hit by a car one morning.

Dogs serve many different needs for people. Some people get a dog because they are lonely and need a loyal friend or because they want a dog to protect the home. A dog that is taken good care of and given attention to regularly will give his life to help protect his home and his owner. For the blind a dog can be a pair of eyes to help them get around and for the police a dog can be an important tool and a loyal partner, with a nose that nothing can beat.

The first thing you need to know about taking care of a dog is that dogs need lots of exercise. This is the same for large dogs and small dogs. All dogs need to be let out at least once every 8 hours and should given at least a 20 minute walk to give the dog some fresh air, exercise and a chance to relieve themselves.

It is also important to play with the dog on a regular basis. This can mean going to the park on a weekend or day off and having a good game of fetch, tossing the ball around in your back yard or just wrestling on the ground with the dog, just make sure if you are ruff housing with a little dog that you donÂ’t accidentally hurt the dog. Playing with the dog for a half hour a day, is not only good for the dogs physical health but a dig that is played with regularly is mentally healthier and less likely to become a depressed dog, it also lowers your blood pressure as well and it will form an unbreakable bond between you and your pooch, which will extend to your family if you should start having one after having the dog.

What you feed your dog is very important to the dogs continued good health. The better dog foods will be marked for what are groups the food is appropriate for. Younger dogs need certain vitamins and minerals in larger amounts then an adult dog, and the same goes for an elderly dog they need more calcium in their food to help protect their bones and joints. Feeding your dog the wrong food can stunt the dog’s growth and opens the dog to a larger risk of surgery when they are older.

Just like a person a dog should be taken to the veterinarian’s office every 6 months, and must receive their shots every year. Regular checkups and vaccinations will also help assure that your dog grows to be an old happy dog.
