Welcoming Your New Ferret

How do you welcome your new ferret in your family and in your home? There are lot of things that you need to prepare for your new ferret. First you may want to obtain all the necessary things that you will need for your new ferret. Try considering these few ideas that can assist you in your preparation.

Housing Materials – These are one of the vital things that you need to obtain first. You need to provide a home for your new ferret and the necessary stuff in it, such as food & water dish (choose the heavy one), sleeping accessories (soft and comfortable bed), collar and harness, and toys (have as many toys as you want, your ferret will be happy to play with them. e.g. baby rattles or balls). They need to have a very comfortable home. Ferret sleeps very long. They normally sleep 18-20 hours a day. They sleep this long because they need to regain the energy that they’ve lost. Maybe you are aware that your new ferret is very energetic and hyper. They just love to play around when they are awake. So, don’t disturb them when they are sleeping. You can also provide them a hammock. Ferrets really love hammock because it provides them the perfect spot for resting and sleeping.

Food – You should have enough food stored before you bring your new ferret home. Ferrets are carnivorous. It means they eat meat as their diet. They get the nutrients that they need from a meat-based diet. You’re maybe wondering where you can buy ferret food? You cannot find ferret food in ordinary grocery stores. Avoid feeding them with fruits and vegetables to prevent any health complication. You can buy your new ferret canned cat food products that contain meat. Also avoid feeding them food that are high in fibre. Their bodies are not designed to digest these fibres. It can result to soft and running mucous bowel movement, and you don’t want that to happen. Just focus on meat-base food for their diet and you will be fine.

Grooming Materials – Of course you want your new ferret to look good, neat and clean. You can provide your ferret some grooming materials such as a brush, shampoo, and soap (only use cat products. Do not use dog products). You need to double check to make sure that your ferret is free from ear mites before bringing them home. Ear mites can cause them health problems in the future. Always clean their cage or home, food and water dishes, and toys. Clean house and food dishes means happy ferret.
